The NTT INDYCAR Series was formed in 2021 in the second season of Mystic Racing League and from the start, it's been a success. A total of 103 events at over 25 different tracks, the NTT INDYCAR Series brings a lot of variety to the table.
Brandon Willard holds the majority of the records in the NTT INDYCAR Series with 42 victories out of 88 starts including winning championships in 2021, 2022 and 2023. Christian Barnes, who began his rookie season in 2024 narrowly edged Willard by 54 points to win the title.
Fan favorites such as Reggie Keim and Joey Whitford are staples of what makes the INDYCAR scene so competitive each and every week. The 2025 season holds a 25-race slate that once again opens up at Long Beach Street Circuit on Tuesday, February 19.
Manufacturers develop different types of engines, while every team uses the same chassis. Currently, Dallara provides a specification chassis to all teams, with Honda and Chevrolet providing teams different engines.
Superficially, INDYCAR machines closely resemble those of other open-wheeled formula racing cars, with front and rear wings and prominent airboxes. The bodywork is inspired by CART’s 1990s and 2000s designs, with a more streamlined appearance. The redesigned aero kit reduces both aerodynamic downforce and team and manufacturer design development costs. The universal Aero Kit was designed without the wheel guards of the DW12 chassis, which were deemed ineffective and proved prone to breaking. The IR-18 also lacks an air inlet above the cockpit, a first for an IndyCar Series chassis (most Champ Car chassis had been designed that way). The Aero Kit also has fewer small aerodynamic pieces that can become broken or dislodged, with the intent to reduce the amount of debris that ends up on the track and expenses from repairs.
For the transmission gearboxes, all INDYCAR Series cars currently use an electronically actuated AGS (Assisted Gearchange System) 6-speed semi-automatic sequential gearbox with an electro-pneumatically operated paddle-shift system and a pneumatic clutch with semi-automatic activation. All INDYCAR Series car drivetrains are currently rear mid-engine with rear-wheel-drive layout.
The fuel cell for all current INDYCAR Series cars are made of rubber and are covered with a Kevlar-fitted blanket for extra protection in side impacts.
The engines are now fuel efficient DOHC 2.2-liter twin turbo V6 with four-stroke piston Otto cycle developing an estimated 650-750 horsepower depending on the level of boost used and no inter-cooling systems. They are limited to 12,000 rpm and a minimum weight of 248 lbs (112 kg). Engines are supplied by Chevrolet and Honda.
The current INDYCAR series top speed Is 235-240 mph (378-386 km/h) at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval configuration only. On street/road courses, their top speed is approximately 167-173 mph (268-278 km/h).
The fifth season of the NTT INDYCAR Series takes the green at Long Beach Street Circuit to see who will take the next step in becoming champion!
